Upper Trinity River Adult Chinook Fishing Closes, Jack Salmon Remain Open

Anglers heading to the Upper Trinity River need to account for a change in the salmon season before making their next cast.

The adult fall Chinook fishery closed at 11:59 PM on Wednesday, October 28th, 2026, under the closure announced by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The affected stretch runs from the Old Lewiston Bridge downstream to the Highway 299 West Bridge at Cedar Flat.

What remains open

The closure applies to adult Chinook. Harvest of two year old jack Chinook measuring 23 inches or less remains open in that reach, subject to the applicable fishing regulations.

Any adult Chinook caught must be released immediately. The announcement does not say that all fishing on the Upper Trinity has closed.

The department projected that anglers would reach the section’s allocation of 536 adult Chinook by the announced closing time. Different parts of the Klamath and Trinity rivers have separate quotas, so an opening in one section does not establish the rules for another.

Anglers targeting salmon in those rivers must have a 2026 North Coast Salmon Report Card and record their fishing activity as required.

For updated quota information, the department maintains a recorded information line at (800) 564-6479. Check the current rules for the specific river section before fishing.
