Redding Burn Season Opens November 1st, Free Burn Permits Available Online
Redding burn season opens November 1st, 2026. Residents and businesses can obtain a no cost open burning permit online and must follow local burn day and fire safety requirements.

Burn season is set to officially open in the City of Redding on Sunday, November 1st, 2026, giving residents and businesses another option for managing dry vegetation on their property.
The Redding Fire Department says the season officially opens at 8:00 AM. Open burning permits are available for both residential and commercial use at no cost, and the permit process can now be completed online.
Anyone burning must keep a copy of the permit available during the burn. It can be printed or kept as the permit email on a phone.
Before you burn, check the burn day
Having a permit does not mean burning is allowed every day.
Before burning, residents must call the daily burn information line at 530-224-8777 after 9:15 AM to confirm that it is a permissive burn day.
On approved burn days within the City of Redding, fires may be ignited between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM and must be completely extinguished by 5:00 PM.
What can be burned
Only dry vegetation may be burned under the City's open burning rules. Materials including garbage, paper, cardboard, construction debris, plastics, rubber, clothing, roofing materials and animal waste cannot be burned.
Burn barrels are also prohibited.
Burn pile and safety requirements
For properties smaller than one acre, burn piles may be no larger than four feet in diameter and must have at least 10 feet of clearance from surrounding flammable material or vegetation.
For properties larger than one acre, piles may be up to 10 feet by 10 feet and must have at least 25 feet of clearance from surrounding flammable material or vegetation.
Burning must take place at least 50 feet from structures.
An adult must remain with the fire and have a shovel available until the fire is completely extinguished. A water supply is also required at the burn site.
Burning should not take place when wind or other weather conditions make it unsafe.
Mechanically created burn piles must be inspected by the Shasta County Air Quality Management District and the Redding Fire Department before they are burned.
Season can change with fire conditions
Redding's open burn season typically runs from November 1st through April 30th, but those dates remain dependent on fire and weather conditions. The Fire Marshal may close or extend the season when conditions warrant.
The opening of the calendar burn season also does not override an active fire season closure. Open burning remains prohibited until fire officials have officially determined conditions allow it.
Residents with questions can contact the Redding Fire Department at 530-225-4141.
As always be sure to check this information with the local authorities before proceeding.
