Residents near Weaverville and McCloud may see smoke next week as the Shasta Trinity National Forest plans prescribed burns beginning Monday, November 2nd, 2026.

The operations are intended to reduce overgrown vegetation and help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires. All burning depends on weather conditions and required approvals.

In the Weaverville Community Forest, crews plan to begin operations Monday, November 2nd, on 83 acres in the Phase 1/Five 6 and EW 10 units.

The Highway 89 Underburn is planned for Tuesday, November 3rd, through Wednesday, November 4th. The 2,000 acre project is about seven miles east of McCloud, just north of State Route 89 and Ash Creek Station.

Areas near the projects may be closed to the public for several days for safety. Visitors should watch for warning signs along roads near prescribed fire areas before and during burning.

Residents may experience smoke during the operations. Drivers who encounter smoke on the road should slow down and turn on their headlights. Air quality information is available through AirNow’s fire and smoke map or the AirNow app.

Forest personnel will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before ignition. Scheduled burns may be canceled if conditions warrant.

Updates will be provided through the forest’s website and social media channels. County emergency management officials will be notified when burning begins.
