A bag containing a half pound of methamphetamine was thrown from a vehicle as its driver continued past an attempted traffic stop at slow speeds, according to the Redding Police Department. Two Shasta County men were later booked into jail.

The department’s Neighborhood Police Unit had been investigating Freddie Cox, 55, of Keswick, on suspicion of selling methamphetamine. Officers located Cox riding in a vehicle driven by George William Dunlap, 78, of Redding.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, Dunlap failed to yield and continued driving at slow speeds, police said. During the incident, Cox allegedly threw a bag from the vehicle. Officers recovered the bag and reported that it contained a half pound of methamphetamine.

Investigators also obtained a search warrant for Cox and his residence. Police said the search uncovered evidence consistent with drug sales, along with ammunition. According to the department, Cox has a prior felony conviction and is prohibited from possessing ammunition.

Cox was booked into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine for sale, transporting methamphetamine, destruction of evidence and being a felon in possession of ammunition.

Dunlap was booked into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of transporting methamphetamine and failing to yield to a police officer.

The release did not specify when or where the traffic stop occurred. The allegations have not been proven in court. Both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The department listed Sgt. Ellis as the contact for the case at 530-225-4200.
