Looking for a public works job in Plumas County, California? The county is hiring a Public Works Maintenance Worker I or II for its Greenville District, with work focused on maintaining the roads, bridges and drainage systems that local communities rely on.

The position is listed as open until filled.

Pay and experience

The county’s posting lists Maintenance Worker I pay at $20.36 to $24.74 an hour and Maintenance Worker II pay at $21.38 to $25.98 an hour.

Maintenance Worker I is the entry and training level. Some previous experience performing heavy physical labor is highly desirable. Employees begin with closer supervision while learning the work and developing the knowledge and work habits needed for broader assignments.

Promotion to Maintenance Worker II may be possible after those skills are demonstrated and the employee performs duties beyond heavy physical labor and driving. Advancement is not described as automatic.

Maintenance Worker II is the experienced journey level. The posting lists one year of road maintenance and construction experience comparable to the county’s Maintenance Worker II work.

What the work involves

Both levels perform assignments involving road, bridge and drainage maintenance, repair and construction. Level I employees learn to operate light equipment, while Level II employees operate that equipment as part of their assignments.

Level II employees may also operate heavy equipment while training or during emergencies.

Driver’s license requirement

The listing requires an appropriate, valid and current California Class A or Class B driver’s license that meets the position’s requirements. Employees transporting hazardous materials may also need special endorsements.

How to apply

Visit Plumas County’s official employment page and select “Public Works: Maintenance Worker I/II: Greenville District” to review the opening and application instructions.

A county application is required. A resume alone does not replace it. The county says online applications do not need to be followed by a printed copy.

Because recruitment remains open until filled, interested applicants should check the official listing for the latest availability and requirements before applying.
