North Coast BLM Campfire Restrictions Ease, Year Round Rules Still Apply

Some North Coast public lands have moved out of summer fire restrictions, but visitors still need to check the rules before lighting a campfire.
The Bureau of Land Management eased seasonal restrictions for lands managed by its Arcata Field Office effective October 13th, 2026.
That office manages public lands in Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino counties. The change does not establish the rules for every park, campground or private property in those counties.
Campfires are again allowed where permitted, subject to a valid California Campfire Permit and any posted restrictions.
The statewide rules remain
The BLM’s current California fire information page continues to list the statewide fire prevention requirements.
Outside developed campgrounds, those requirements include a valid campfire permit, a cleared area measuring at least five feet in diameter with no overhead flammable material, and an accessible round point shovel at least 35 inches long.
Site specific restrictions can still apply. A seasonal order being lifted does not mean every location is open to every type of fire.
For a fall camping trip, confirm which agency manages the destination and read the notices posted there.
Visitors with questions about lands managed by the Arcata Field Office can contact the office at (707) 825-2300.
