Families who want to cut their own Christmas tree in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest can buy a permit through December 24th, 2026. The season opened November 1st, and permits cost $10 per tree, with a limit of one tree per household.

Permits are sold at ranger district offices, the Forest Supervisor’s Office in Redding and participating vendors in Mount Shasta, McCloud, Weaverville, Hayfork and Redding. Online purchases carry a $2.50 service fee.

Fourth graders can get a permit at no cost through the Every Kid Outdoors program. The online service fee still applies.

Before heading out, review the permit map and check for forest closures and current weather conditions. Cut only within designated areas of the national forest and carry your permit map with you.

Find local vendors through the U.S. Forest Service or buy a permit through Recreation.gov.
