Chico State Faculty Prepare for Possible Strike as Authorization Vote Continues

Chico State faculty held a practice picket as a CSU strike authorization vote continues through November 19th, with contract talks still unresolved.

Chico State faculty are preparing for a possible strike as California Faculty Association members vote on whether to authorize job actions across the California State University system.

Faculty and supporters held a practice picket on October 28th. CFA listed the Chico event for 10 AM to 1 PM at the Library Breezeway, 400 West First Street. The North State Labor Federation has indicated support for faculty if a strike is called.

The authorization vote opened October 26th and is scheduled to continue through November 19th. A vote to authorize a strike would give union leadership permission to act. It would not automatically set a strike date or mean a walkout is inevitable.

Why faculty are preparing

The dispute concerns a successor contract covering pay and working conditions. CFA identifies workload, lecturer protections, health care, academic freedom and the use of artificial intelligence among its priorities.

The union says negotiations began in 2025, reached impasse in July 2026 and moved through mediation into factfinding in September. Factfinding hearings are scheduled for the first half of November.

Chico's organizing schedule also includes a Strike School session on October 29th from 5 PM to 6 PM in ARTS 228.

A new bargaining development

In an October 29th update, CFA said CSU management had invited its bargaining team back to discussions, primarily about salary. The union said it was willing to meet for substantive negotiations after factfinding concludes on November 13th, while continuing the authorization vote and strike preparations.

CFA argued that an agreement must address working conditions as well as compensation. Those statements describe the union's position, rather than a contract settlement.

CSU has separately announced tentative agreements with other employee unions. Its October announcement described two 4 percent salary increases, producing a cumulative 8.16 percent increase by July 2027, plus additional compensation negotiated by bargaining unit. CSU says it is seeking competitive compensation while maintaining financial sustainability.

Those agreements cover other employee groups and do not resolve CFA's contract dispute.

What students should know

A practice picket and an authorization ballot do not establish that Chico State classes have been canceled. CFA says any contract strike would follow the required bargaining process.

The union explains that an actual strike could involve teaching, counseling, library services, coaching and other faculty work. The scope, timing and campus effects would depend on any action eventually announced.
