CAL FIRE plans prescribed burn east of Portola starting November 9th

CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit news release announcing a prescribed burn east of Portola.

CAL FIRE plans to begin a prescribed burn on 83 acres east of Portola on Monday, November 9th, 2026, if weather and fuel conditions allow. Smoke may be visible in Portola, Beckwourth and Lake Davis.

The Lassen Modoc Unit will conduct the burn at the Sierra Nevada Journeys Outdoor Education Camp off Grizzly Road, about two miles east of Portola in Plumas County. CAL FIRE expects burning to take two to three days, with personnel and equipment remaining on site for most of the week.

The project aims to reduce wildfire risk around the camp and limit the potential for fire to spread to nearby communities and ranchlands. It will also target noxious weeds and brush in the camp’s wetlands.

CAL FIRE asks residents to reserve 911 for emergencies during the burn. For questions about the project, contact the Lassen Modoc Unit at 530-257-4171.
