Burning Can Resume November 1st in Shasta and Eastern Trinity, Permits Still Required

CAL FIRE is lifting the burn permit suspension in State Responsibility Areas of Shasta and Eastern Trinity counties beginning November 1st, 2026. Valid permits, permissive burn days and local air district requirements still apply.

Cooler weather and recent rain are bringing a change for residents waiting to burn yard vegetation in parts of Shasta and Trinity counties.

CAL FIRE’s Shasta Trinity Unit announced that the burn permit suspension will be lifted effective Sunday, November 1st, 2026, for State Responsibility Areas in Shasta and Eastern Trinity counties.

People with current, valid agricultural and residential burn permits may resume burning on permissive burn days beginning on that date. The announcement does not authorize burning everywhere in either county or override local restrictions.

A permit is still required

The suspension is being lifted, but burn permits remain required. CAL FIRE says permits can only be obtained online at burnpermit.fire.ca.gov or by using the kiosk at CAL FIRE headquarters to apply.

Hard copy burn permits are no longer issued, and applicants must have a valid email address.

Agricultural burn permits within the State Responsibility Area may require an inspection by CAL FIRE for new applications or renewals until the end of the declared peak fire season.

Shasta County: check the burn day first

Before burning in Shasta County, residents must verify that it is a permissive burn day with the Shasta County Air Quality Management District.

The release directs residents to call 530-224-8777 or 1-800-411-8728 after 9:00 a.m., or check the county’s burn day information page.

Having a permit does not mean burning is allowed every day. Follow the conditions on the permit and any restrictions that apply to the property. Residents within cities or other fire jurisdictions should confirm their local requirements.

Trinity County: two permits are required

The North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District requires both an air district permit and a CAL FIRE burn permit for burn operations in Trinity County, including residential dooryard burning and agricultural hazard reduction burning.

For an air district permit, call 707-443-3093. For burn day status, call 707-443-7665 or 866-287-6329.

The CAL FIRE suspension lifting described in this announcement applies to Eastern Trinity County’s State Responsibility Areas. Residents elsewhere in Trinity County should confirm the rules for their location before burning.

Fire season is still in effect

CAL FIRE says the region remains in declared fire season, and wildfire risk has not disappeared. Current weather and vegetation conditions have improved the opportunity to use permitted burning to reduce vegetation around communities and rural properties.

The agency says its facilities will remain fully staffed until sufficient rainfall allows a gradual reduction in fire control resources. A burn permit suspension could be issued again if adverse fire weather returns.

Residents must make sure dooryard burn piles are extinguished and secured ahead of forecast wind events.

Before lighting a pile, confirm the permit requirements for your property, check the day’s burn status and follow all applicable restrictions. November 1st is the effective date for lifting the suspension, not blanket permission to burn.
