An Extra Hour After Halloween: North State Clocks Fall Back Early Sunday

Daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, November 1st, 2026. North State residents should set clocks back one hour and prepare for earlier evening darkness.

Halloween weekend comes with an extra hour on the clock this year. Across Redding, Chico, Red Bluff and the rest of California’s North State, daylight saving time ends early Sunday, November 1st, 2026.

At 2:00 a.m., clocks turn back one hour to 1:00 a.m., marking the return to Pacific Standard Time. The 1:00 a.m. hour happens twice, giving Sunday an extra hour.

For anyone heading to bed after Halloween activities Saturday night, setting manual clocks back before turning in can help avoid confusion the next morning.

Which clocks need attention?

Most smartphones and other connected devices update automatically when their automatic date, time and time zone settings are enabled. Wall clocks, some vehicle clocks, watches and appliance clocks may need to be changed by hand. Check alarm settings as well, especially if you have work, travel, church or another commitment Sunday morning.

If you work overnight or have transportation scheduled during the repeated hour, confirm the timing with your employer or travel provider.

Expect darkness earlier in the evening

The time change shifts an hour of daylight from the evening to the morning by the clock. It does not change the actual amount of daylight in a day.

That means sunset will arrive about an hour earlier on the clock Sunday than it did Saturday. For North State families, the adjustment can make afternoon activities, evening walks and the trip home feel darker sooner.

Drivers should watch carefully for people walking and biking as evening darkness arrives earlier. Anyone heading outdoors late in the day should plan for visibility and bring a light when needed.

A useful household reminder

The clock change is also a convenient reminder to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for testing and battery replacement, including for alarms with sealed batteries.

The main thing to remember this weekend: before bed Saturday, October 31st, turn manual clocks back one hour. When 2:00 a.m. arrives Sunday, November 1st, it becomes 1:00 a.m. again.
